First Impressions

Well I just finished my first week at hi as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator co – op student and all I can say is – wow. This place is great! Being relatively new to Hamilton I must admit that the idea of flying out of hi never really occurred to me before last month, but that has certainly changed.First Impressions Blog Photo

As I drove through the rolling hills of Hwy 6, I couldn’t help but think how simple it was to get here.  Absent was the bumper-to-bumper traffic that I was used to on the 401 and 409 – and this was rush hour!  Could have fooled me!   Upon arrival I could not believe just how much more calm hi is to just about anything else I have ever experienced.  No panic stricken drivers looking for the proper departures area, no cabbies jockeying for positions with horns a-blazing.  This is how I would like to travel.

For those that have never been to hi its scope can’t be justified until you see it firsthand.  Soon after I walked into the office I was lucky enough to be taken on a tour of hi’s facilities along with a couple of my colleagues.  It was quite a thrill for me to be out on the airfield and is something I will not quickly forget.  The expanse is simply gigantic, it was difficult to see across to the tower and firehall and I even had my glasses on.

As we made are way along the taxi ways amongst the massive airliners and airport machinery it really put everything into perspective. The airside was a bigger world and although things seemed as though they are right around the corner I quickly noticed that the dimensions on that side were vastly different then anything I was used  too. The terminal has all the amenities one could ask for and the new departures lounge is very well done with large, comfortable seats and a “Bruce Trail-inspired” ambiance that I am sure makes for a very comfortable experience.

On Thursday, I finally got the chance to walk through the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.  What a magnificent facility.  The place was bustling with tour groups eagerly examining the impressive number of historically significant aircraft.  I hope to get the chance to walk through in greater detail soon.

hi is a gem and I hope that those living in and around Hamilton understand just how lucky they are to have an Airport this accessible.  For the record, I would much rather make the trip along the QEW than the 401, the travel time is comparable and you can’t beat hi’s convenience.

Wow Hamilton sure sounds like a fantastic place to fly out, not hectic at all! I will try and make my next trip from this location!

I agree, the Canadian Airplane Museum is a magnificent facility. Not only is Hamilton one of the most desired places to live in the nation, it ranks up there as one of the greatest cities in the world. Tourists from all over the world spend months planning and saving for their “dream trip” into Hamilton.

I spent the last three years in Japan and whenever people discovered I was Canadian, the first thing they said was: “Have you been to Hamilton? It is my dream to go there.”

As a person who fly’s home to Toronto quite often. Are there any other benefits to flying into HI than ease of use?

I agree with you. I’ve flown out of Hamilton Intl before (to Halifax) and it was one of the more relaxing travel experiences I have had. I also like the fact that it is far more convenient than going to Pearson.

  8. Scott says:

I like the smaller airports. You can arrive just before your flight leaves and there are usually no line ups at check-in or security….and the planes leave on time!

  9. Informative blog with good useful information.
