Who was John C. Munro?

John C. Munro  Hamilton International Airport is named after one of the City’s most prominent political figures, John Carr Munro.  Born in Hamilton on March 16th, 1931, Mr. Munro was an active political and community leader in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s; he passed away on August 19th, 2003 at the age of 72.

During his 22 years in political office, John C. Munro’s vision and political savvy saw countless landmark projects brought to realization, many of them directly benefiting the Hamilton community. As a Member of Parliament for the City of Hamilton, Mr. Munro played a key role in implementing Canada’s first national medicare program, developing the Canada Centre of Inland Waters, establishing McMaster’s School of Medicine, and bringing the Canadian Centre for Safety and Occupational Health to the City of Hamilton. Additionally, Mr. Munro was a leader in efforts to expand and modernize Hamilton Harbour, which has now developed into one of Canada’s major deep water ports, creating thousands of jobs and generating millions of dollars in economic output.

For many years, expanding the Hamilton Airport into a regional transportation hub was an aspiration for many Hamilton politicians and John C. Munro was instrumental in bringing that aspiration to fruition. In the early 1980’s, Mr. Munro fought to secure over $55 million in federal investment for the expansion of what was then known as the Mount Hope Airport.   This investment enabled significant infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a new 8,000 ft. runway, a new and improved taxiway, an expanded passenger aircraft apron, new car parking facilities, new passenger access roadway to the terminal, an expanded air terminal building, and other related airport services, all of which allowed the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and increase passenger traffic.

In the period since that first expansion, Hamilton International has grown to become Canada’s premier intermodal cargo airport and the secondary airport for Toronto, the nation’s largest passenger market, and remains a strong economic driver for the City of Hamilton. None of this success would have been possible without the on-going support and infrastructure growth facilitated by Mr. Munro.

John C. Munro is remembered for his countless contributions as an impassioned, perseverant leader who firmly believed in the City of Hamilton and its future growth potential. The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is proud to bear his name and hopes to carry on his legacy for years to come.
