Do you know what AEGD stands for? Well I didn’t but I do now. AEGD stands for Airport Employment Growth District. So what exactly is that, you ask?
Well, the Airport Employment Growth District (AEGD) is a proposed development site of approximately 1134 hectares surrounding the Hamilton International Airport. The city has identified the AEGD as one of the main areas to address the city’s need for employment lands. Many studies and ongoing consultations have indicated that developing this area will provide several significant benefits to Hamilton, Ontario including:
- Generate 20,000 – 30,000 new jobs
- Contribute significant additional revenue to Hamilton
- Provide critical support for Hamilton’s infrastructure
Yes more jobs! Isn’t that exciting in these trying economic times! :-)
I thought it was important to let you know that the Hamilton International Airport has launched a community collaboration website to get the facts out about the AEGD . Since you’re an important member of the Hamilton community, I invite you to visit the website and leave a comment on the blog stating your perspective on the project. I hope you find it as useful and informative as I do.
Remember, as the Executive Assistant to the President, I can see that you are heard. Tell me your perspective and please visit the AEGD website for more details. Either way we want to hear from you!

hello, I just came upon this while job searching hamilton airport…as someone who is looking to change my career field…I think its fantastic…its hard to find dencent work these days….and something like this could be fantastic….but my question to you “Is when?”
Hello Judi,
Thank you for your post. As you may be aware the decision to move ahead and continue assessing the Airport Economic Growth District (AEGD) was passed by Hamilton City Council on June 24th 2010. This is an important step in the process of finalizing a plan for the land surrounding the airport which we feel is integral to the future of Hamilton. It will offer prospective organizations an attractive location for business looking for multi modal transportation and access to the largest Southern Ontario catchment area.
There will now be a period of public consultation before City Council makes an approval decision in October 2010. We hope at that point to be actively promoting the benefits of locating businesses in Hamilton near the airport. If passed, adoption of the infrastructure proposal will likely take 2 more years before development gets underway.
The AEGD is a priority in the City’s GRIDS initiative. It is vital that Hamiltonians recognize the potential of AEGD on Hamilton’s economy in terms future job creation & prosperity. Furthermore, it is important that we collectively tackle each AEGD hurdle as quickly as possible. Other communities in Southern Ontario are aggressively attracting business to their communities and we have to be careful that we do not lose out to them.

Dear Rob,
Are you aware at this time of any land being purchased for this development project? Has all environmental and heritage components been completed on the subject properties?
Good afternoon Mr. Bandow.
Thank you for your inquiry. The AEGD is a city led initiative and consequently we are not privy to specific information regarding land use or land ownership. The best source of information would be to either contact the city or visit there website.
I have attached the link to the cities main AEGD page for your convenience:

The environmental and heritage components were completed in 2008, during the first phase of the AEGD analysis.
Below is the link to the environmental and Heritage finding and recommendations:
